July was yet another slow month. I managed a little bit of worldbuilding and conlang work on STARCALLER, but I spent most of the month organizing and participating in Ozark Writers Workshop 2020 as both a host and panelist. Working on that took up most of my energy, and I rarely had anything leftover for working on anything creative. My pandemic updates have been super underwhelming, I am sure, but I’m not beating myself up over my lack of productivity. It is what it is. Maybe with school starting back up soon (if school is safe enough to start, which I very seriously doubt), I may be able to get something written or edited or brainstormed.

I am proud of the work I did do this month, and I’m happy with how my conlang is coming along, if slowly. I have over 250 basic terms defined so far, with plurals, verb, and adjective forms where applicable. I have nearly 375 syllables to make up the basic words, and once I’ve defined all of those, I’ll move on to compound and complex words. By the end of the year, I’d like to have a working dictionary of at least 500 nouns, plus their verbs and adjectives, as well as a working grammar, which is slowly formulating in my head. I’ve worked a bit on the writing system, but it very may well get an overhaul before I feel totally happy with it. It’s perfectly functional right now, but I want to make sure I take all the various elements of a language’s origin and evolution before I commit to specific form. Right now, the vocal language is more important, as I need it for naming things.

Plans for August:

BLOOD OF SALT, TEARS OF PEARL is printed out, hole-punched, bound, and ready for its first read through since I finished the draft back in March—and has been for the last month. I would like to start working on that soon, if I am able to. But I would also like to catch up on my reading a bit and get some outside story input into the creative well before diving headfirst into that monster of my own words. I have more books to read than I know what to do with, but it’s been hard to muster the energy or desire to read anything these past few months that isn’t nonfiction or related in some way to STARCALLER. So maybe if/when school starts back up, I’ll spend those quiet hours reading some honest-to-goodness fiction, until I feel like I’ve stored up enough creative energy to start working on my own book. We’ll see.

So, I may work on BLOOD OF SALT, TEARS OF PEARL, when I am ready to take on that monumental task. I will probably dabble a bit more with STARCALLER’s worldbuilding and conlang, as the mood strikes. And I will try to get some more reading done.
