Quick NaNoWriMo update!
Yesterday was the midpoint for the month, and I’m at just over 28,000 words for THE MERMAID AND THE BEAST.
A couple of things:
1) Two straight weeks of writing, and I’m starting to feel the drag of writing every single day. I never write on the weekends in the normal writing year, and I very rarely write at night, so I’m starting to feel a little burnout from writing with zero breaks. No “I don’t feel like writing today” days. It’s one of the things I hate most about NaNo. I’ll be glad when the month is over and I can get back to writing on my own time.
2) I’m REALLY enjoying this book, y’all. I’m three chapters in (plus a lengthy prologue), and I’m really having fun setting up the story and getting to know my characters. I’m still firmly in the “beginning” of the story, before the main character literally crosses the threshold into the human world, but by the end of chapter four, that will change.
I’m really glad I had the idea for this book, because I really needed a twisted fairytale retelling in my repertoire. It’s such a change of pace from everything else I’ve written, and I like that. There are some plot hiccups I need to smooth over, but for the sake of word count, those will have to wait until November is done.
This book is also going to be very VERY long. I’m nearly 30,000 words in, and I’m only on chapter FOUR. I’m maybe 20% into the story? Maybe? Yeah. It’s going to be a doorstopper of a first draft apparently.
Anyway, that’s where I’m at right now. Hopefully I can muster a second wind and write another 28,000 words over the next two weeks. See you on the other side!
