Writing went pretty well this month, considering I spent the first week on doctors appointments and prepping for an event for a non-profit organization I volunteer for (not the one I run). I have a busy life. I’m proud of what I managed to write in the three weeks after, even though some days were hard, with me starting up physical therapy for my pelvis twice a week. I’m starting to feel a little bit of burnout with everything going on, so I’m trying to take it easy and cut myself some slack. There’s been several days that I’ve stepped away from the computer early because I know trying to push through another two hours won’t produce enough material to be worth the effort. I think it’s the one thing that’s kept me sane the past few weeks—that, and playing Breath of the Wild over again.
I still haven’t made it to 150,000 words, but I’m close. Really close.
Word Counts in June:
BLOOD OF SALT, TEARS OF PEARL: 24,228
Total Words in June: 26,621
Total Words in 2019: 182,924
Halfway through the year, and over 180,000 words written!!!
Plans for July:
As of writing this, I am at 147,444 words on BLOOD OF SALT, TEARS OF PEARL (my beautiful, insane monster of a book). I’m going to keep trying for my 30,000 words each month, so my ambitious goal is to get to 180,000 words by the end of July. That comes to a little more than 32,500 as a total goal. That’s quite a bit above my 25,000 word average I’ve been pulling these last six months, but I enjoy a challenge, and I want to push myself to write more words than I have been. I’m nothing if not persistent.
Story-wise, I’m almost to the midpoint in the outline, but that probably translates to nearing the 2/3rds mark in the actual book, based on what I can tell about the book right now. There’s a lot more page time in Act I and the first half of Act II, and after the midpoint, things should speed up. So I’m probably looking at another 80,000 words until I finish the first draft, maybe? Which would bring the book to about 225,000 words total. This book is a MONSTER.
This is all speculation of course, because who knows what will happen between now and then, but if I can stay on target, then that means finishing the first draft by the end of September. Here’s hoping.
I got a little caught up this month, after falling behind in May, and I managed to do almost everything for the Patreon! The “almost” is frustrating for me, since I wasn’t able to do any artwork, which sucks, because after being unable to do it two months in a row, I’ve decided to remove the artwork tiers from the rewards. It’s one thing I can’t seem to keep up with, so it gets the axe. That means less guilt for me and one less thing for me to worry about each month. Sorry to Michael, my one patron who actually got to see any of it. ☹
That said, here’s what I did post this month!
POEM: A Different World – a poem that is no so subtly about my escape from the real world into games and books
VIDEO: Writing Chapter 18 for BLOOD OF SALT, TEARS OF PEARL – a sped-up real-time writing session
BEHIND-THE-SCENES: Mid-Book Adjustments – a post about changing my outline as I near the middle of the book
And I want to thank all of my wonderful patrons, especially those of you who’ve been around since I first launched late last year. It means so much to me that you support my work each month. Your dollars have been put to good use in buying me a new printer, most of all, but also for making it possible for me to go to a writing conference in March. I hope you’re all enjoying the content each month, and I look forward to what the rest of the year brings.
