How is it already March!? Ugh, this year…
My primary goal for February was to finish the first draft of REBEL ENGINEER (Chroniker City #2.5), and while I made lots of progress, I still have a long way to go before I write “The End”. I’m a little over halfway through the outline now, and the draft is already inching toward 28,000 words, which means this may end up a bit longer than the 35,000 word novella I had originally planned. At this rate, I’m looking at the very real possibility that this may end up a short novel instead, with the first draft clocking in around 45,000 to 50,000 words. I may be able to pare that down in edits, but we’ll see. The good news is that readers will get a longer story. The bad news is that means it will take me longer to write.
I feel pretty good about what I’ve written on the book so far, with the addition of some very important scenes and characters that further flesh out the world I created with the advent of Chroniker City. And I’m excited for what happens next in the book, where the overlap between REBEL ENGINEER and The Guild Conspiracy becomes obvious. Readers will finally learn the other side of what happens in Amiens, and I’m excited to show what Emmerich has really been up to in Paris all this time.
I also dabbled in a few other projects this month, including the next book in the Chroniker City series, tentatively titled THE CHRONIKER LEGACY.
So, without further ado…
February Word Counts:
REBEL ENGINEER: 19,981 (drafting)
THE CHRONIKER LEGACY: 3,227 (brainstorming)
DARK LORD IN TRAINING: 1,723 (brainstorming)
Untitled Epic Fantasy: ~750 (3 pages handwritten notes; brainstorming)
Total for February: 26,289 words
(Total for 2017 so far: 47,111)
Plans for March:
If I can maintain a steady output of writing, I should be able to finish the first draft of REBEL ENGINEER by the end of the month. I will try for sooner (because this book has taken me forever already), but because I will be doing a lot of author appearances and events this month (plus spring break!), I won’t have as much writing time as usual, so we’ll see. If I finish the book before the end of the month, I hope to spend the rest of March working on the outline for the next book in the series, and if I have time, do a bit more drafting on DARK LORD IN TRAINING before diving into edits on REBEL ENGINEER in April.
